GATE- 2010: Achieving 99% percentile - 9 Step guide

A majority of people, after pursuing engineering, opt for mainly two things that are management or M.Tech. Present economic situation results in letting every UG candidate to pursue higher education either M.Tech or MBA. In order to get admission in M.Tech in reputed engineering colleges in India such as IITs, IISc & NITs, you need to crack GATE(Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering).

After giving GATE, 2 years back, I successfully completed my Master in IIT-Madras with core Job in hand. I think that my 9 step guide for GATE preparation would be useful to some or the other.

Having seen past few years GATE exam papers, you can observe weightage given to each topic in any branch of engineering. For I know, one doesn't need to study everything from 4 years of engineering. By selecting few topics, you can score 99% with little efforts n proper planning. Believe me, 2 to 3 months preparation is enough for that.

Generally, question paper preparation is set keeping all the students in view. The difficulty of questions vary from moderate to very difficult level. No one will never be in a position to answer all/no questions.

I observed, in any branch of engineering, mathematics covers 25 to 30 marks. Ask any coaching institute or GATE ranker about the level of difficulty in mathematics, One will say, definitely, mathematics has never been a difficult one. If one doesn't prepare Maths, he has to learn costly lessons.

Here, am describing GATE preparation needed for Mechanical Engineering. Its a 9 step guide.

You can broadly classify entire syllabus into four categories: Mathematics, Design, Thermal & Fluids, Manufacturing.

Step -1: Mathematics

At first, leave everything, but prepare mathematics. Since we are engineers, every one needs to have basic idea of mathematics. So, GATE tests your fundamental understanding of maths, but not of deep topics of it.

Step -2: Operations research

This is generally considered as a part of manufacturing. Don't touch any other part of manufacturing. But, read everything related linear programming, Job scheduling, transportation, demand planning, forecasting - planning and queuing etc. All this together won't take time greater than one week to 10 days. In fact, these are few of the easiest topics in Mechanical engg. I am sure that u will get not less than 20-25 marks.

Step -3: Design > Engineering Mechanics & Strength of Materials
The next area of concentration is EM and SM in Design part. Since, these are basic concepts, one will find easy in completing these subjects.

Step -4: Fluids > Fluid Mechanics & Machinery, Thermodynamics

Step -5: Design > Theory of machines, Design of machine elements

Step -6: Fluids > Heat transfer

Step -8: Manufacturing

Here, I wanted to give some suggestion. In this section, give more importance to "Metal cutting" chapter. Never want to be through in this subject. Its almost like ocean. Apart from this, its good to give a glance of the entire manufacturing subject. If you are not in a position to look through it, don't do this. Go to next step.

Step -9: Revision>
You must have some time for revision of all that you have read. After this, if you have time study manufacturing.

One suggestion is that - Try to give some mock tests for keeping time frame.

Swiss Bank - Indian accounts

Latest update after Swiss Bank has agreed to disclose the funds, Indians' Money, all together comes to 70, 00,000 Crores Rupees.
This means,

  1. Yes, 70 lakhs crores rupees of India are lying in Switzerland banks. This is the highest amount lying outside any country, from amongst 180 countries of the world, as if India is the champion of Black Money.
  2. Swiss Government has officially written to Indian Government that they are willing to inform the details of holders of 70 lakh crore rupees in their Banks, if Indian Government officially asks them.
  3. On 22-5-08, this news has already been published in The Times of India and other Newspapers based on Swiss Government's official letter to Indian Government.
  4. But the Indian Government has not sent any official enquiry to Switzerland for details of money which has been sent outside India between 1947 to 2008.. The opposition party is also equally not interested in doing so because most of the amount is owned by politicians and it is every Indian's money.
  5. This money belongs to our country. From these funds we can repay 13 times of our country's foreign debt. The interest alone can take care of the Centers yearly budget. People need not pay any taxes and we can pay Rs. 1 lakh to each of 45 crore poor families.
  6. Let us imagine, if Swiss Bank is holding Rs. 70 lakh Crores, then how much money is lying in other 69 Banks? How much they have deprived the Indian people? Just think, if the Account holder dies, the bank becomes the owner of the funds in his account.
  7. Are these people totally ignorant about the philosophy of Karma? What will this ill-gotten wealth do to them and their families when they own/use such money, generated out of corruption and exploitation?
  8. Indian people have read and have known about these facts. But the helpless people have neither time nor inclination to do anything in the matter. This is like "a new freedom struggle" and we will have to fight this.
  9. This money is the result of our sweat and blood.. The wealth generated and earned after putting in lots of mental and physical efforts by Indian people must be brought back to our country.

Prithvi-2 Nuclear capable indian ballistic missile successfully test-fired

The surface to surface short range ballistic missile was test fired twice at 10:28 am and 10:33 am from a mobile launcher at the launch pad number. Two naval ships located at the targets, tracked and monitored the missiles hitting the targets very accurately. All radars and sensors along the east coast monitored the missile trajectory parameters.

Details of mission:
The 4.6 tonne missile can carry both conventional as well as nuclear warheads weighing between 500 to 1000 kg and has the ability to hit a target at a distance of 350 km.

The nine-metre long missile can carry 500 kg of warhead and powered by liquid propulsion twin engine.

It uses advanced inertial guidance system with manoeuvring trajectory and reaches the targets with few metres of accuracy.

While the respective ranges of 150 and 250 km Prithvi I and II was meant for the Army and was in service for more than a decade. The Prithvi III with 350 km was developed for the Navy and first test-fired way back in 2000.

This is, however, not for the first time that a test was conducted on the sophisticated missile. The last test firing was conducted in April this year and for the first time in 1996 n its range was only 150 km.

Floods Preventive measures

The occurrence of floods is something that may come with and without warning, and there is nothing you can do to stop it. However you are not that helpless. There are preventive measures you can do to lessen or control the damage and to protect your homes from the fury of the flood. This should always be your pushing factor to purchase a flood insurance cover for your house building and for the contents of your home.
In case of floods, here are the most basic steps that you can do to minimize damage to your properties. You should pay attention to three of the most critical aspects of your house, and these are electricity, gas and water. First of all remember to turn off all the main switches and controls of these three in your house. For sure you know where these controls are ahead of time. Do not wait for the flood to come before you look for the controls.
Make sure you unplug all the electrical items in your house and if possible haul them on higher places, like the second storey of your house or the attic. If you live in a flood zone, you should already be aware of ideal things to cover your doors and windows like sandbags, metal sheeting and others. Make your safety your priority but if you still have time, you can move as much furniture and things to higher places.
You can also roll up carpets and rugs to avoid them getting sodden and destroying their texture. As much as possible keep everything dry above water. If your house is in a flood zone, you must have a sealed emergency bag containing personal items and valuables like important documents, personal records and other items with sentimental value to you which no amount of insurance claim could replace.

Before anything like a flood happens, you could install your own flood defences as an advanced preparation. Check your local stores for products that can be installed in advance, like a 'flood board', air brick cover, or even plastic skirts to surround your whole property.
When a flood occurs, think of your own safety above all. In the event that you have to vacate your property, cooperate with emergency services and try to do as much as you can while it is still daylight. Remember floods have claimed so many lives. Do not allow yourself to be included in the long list of flood victims.

It may help you to prepare in advance too. Check the flood warnings in your region so you will know what actions to take. As a final precaution, make a personal flood plan for you and your family.

Happy Dasara SMS greetings - Vijaya dasami vijayadasami SMS greetings - Dussara - Navaratri - Durg puja

Myth

In Southern India, Eastern India and Western India, the festival of Navaratri which culminates with Vijayadashami commemorates the legend in which the Goddess Durga, also known as Chamundeshwari or Mahishasura Mardini, vanquishes the demon Mahishasura, an event that is said to have taken place in the vicinity of the present day city of Mysore in Karnataka.
In Northern India, the same 10-day festival commemorates the victory of Rama, prince of Ayodhya in present-day Uttar Pradesh, over Ravana, the ruler of Lanka, who according to the Ramayana had abducted Sita Devi, the wife of the former, and held her captive in his realm.

Why do people hate muslims?

Why do people hate muslims so much? What did they ever do to you? And if you're about to shout '9/11', I just want you to know that they didn't do that. Did you know that people think that Islam is a cault, it's a religion, just like Hinduism, Buddhism or Christianity. If one christian did something wrong, would you blame all of christianity? Even though Usamah Bin Laddin didn't do it.One of my muslim friend cribbed at the situation and said that most muslims did n't even know who Laden was until 9/11. I hate people who judge people, they should all watch the below vedio and then shut up. They don't even know what Islam really is, it has NOTHING to do with politics or countries or Arabs/Pakistanis! It's a religion, you don't have to be American to be christian. So please watch videos like 'Loose Change', it will tell you the real FACTS about 9/11. If you believe Muslim is a synonym of terrorism, please reply here ---- WHY? I would like to give answer that it is not. If I'm not, someone will reply you.

Australia has right to attack Indians

As of now, its not a right of Australia, but in future it will be, unofficially. Why???

Go on............

  • Indians will not learn anything from the past just like what India does. Australians can beat Indians to the death and you can insult them. I swear they wont leave your fucking country. It is said that those who are staying in Australia/ US are PIGs(Poor Indian Graduates). Earlier, they were PIGs in terms of EDUCATION. Now, they are PIGs in terms of VALUES and education. They are there just to get settled in your developed country and eat each piece of your fortune. Don't believe them. Without cosidering all humanitarian values, fuck them hard.
  • These people keep hope on Indian government which is like father of these asshole Indians. Indian govt. talks more than any other country and works less than any other country. This country is developing just beacause of its people but not of Govt. You, Oz govt, don't bother about this India's comments. You keep doing & beat the indians. As time goes, it becomes your right.
  •  I bet if PM does something more than he can bark. He won't do, why because these people staying in abroad can't come all the way to vote for them in the next coming elections.

  • Pakistan is far more better than India, at least it tries to protest itself against attackers in the name of terrorism. India can't protect its people & its soil either from terrorism(Pakistan & China) or from racism(Australia) or Boarder attacks(China). You guys attack India/ Indians for few more times. I guarantee that either govt or people inside country will not bother about this issue as they are bothering it now. It becomes common. Then you can make it as right to attack people. No-one cares.
  • If an incident like Mumbai terror attack is repeated, this govt forgets about Mumbai attack and hang on to the fresh attack. You, Oz, attack these people once again to let India forget about the present attack.

Kerala Onam festival Celebrations - History & Myth

About Onam - Onnam - Thiruonam:
"Onam celebrations" are on 2nd september, 2009.

When is it celebrated?

Onam in kerala is a popular&important festival. Onam or thiruonam is celebrated in the beginning of the first month of Malayalam Calendar (Kolla Varsham) called Chingam. This month corresponds to August-September in Gregorian Calendar and Bhadrapada or Bhadon in Indian (Hindu) Calendar.

When is Thiru Onam?
Onam carnival continues for ten days, starting from the day of Atham and culminating on Thiru Onam. Atham and Thiru Onam are the most important days for Onam festivities. The day of Atham is decided by the position of stars. Onam festival commences from lunar asterism (a cluster of stars smaller than a constellation) Atham (Hastha) that appears ten days before asterism Onam or Thiru Onam. Atham is regarded as auspicious and holy day by people of Kerala. Thiru Onam corresponds to the Shravan day in the month of August or September, hence it is also called Sravanotsavam.

At this time sun is in the Zodiac sign of Leo (Simha rasi), which happens to be the sun's house as well.

Significance of Onam Day in Mythology
The dayof Onam is decided in accordance with the legend of King Mahabali in whose honor Onam is celebrated. People believe that it was this particular day,Lord Vishnu took his fifth avatar as Vaamana, appeared in the kingdom of King Mahabali and sent him to nether world.

People believe that it is on the last day, Tiruonam that the spirit of King Maveli visits Kerala, hence the day is marked by feast and festivities. Devotees of Maveli celebrate the golden era witnessed in Maveli's reign during Onam. To welcome their revered ruler, people lay flower mats (Pookalam) in the front courtyard, prepare a grand meal (Onasadya), dance, play and make merry. All this is done to impress upon King Mahabali that his people are prosperous and happy.

Swine Flu - All about it

Overview

Swine (Pig) flu or H1N1 is a respiratory disease of pigs first described in the 1930s and is common throughout pig populations worldwide. Transmission of the virus from pigs to humans is not common and does not always lead to human influenza often resulting only in the production of antibodies in the blood. People with regular exposure to pigs are at increased risk of swine flu infection. The cases commonly involved pig industry workers or people who came into close contact with infected pigs at country fair.

Like people, pigs can get influenza (flu), but swine flu viruses aren't the same as human flu viruses. In the past, causalities have occurred in the past to those who had direct contact with pigs. But the current swine flu outbreak is different. It's caused by a new swine flu virus that has spread from person to person — and it's happening among people who haven't had any contact with pigs.

Generally, people are tend to cancel their travel plans at the fear of H1N1. As mentioned earlier, human body prepares antibodies in the blood against this virus, you will not be infected, if you are healthy. So, you will be infected, only if you're sick. So, canceling the traveling plans is not needed. The World Health Organization and CDC (Center for Disease Control) currently don't recommend any travel bans or travel restrictions for healthy people. An earlier U.S. advisory against travel to Mexico has been lifted. But if you're sick, health officials want you to stay home. If you have flu-like symptoms, the CDC says you should stay home and avoid travel for seven days after you get sick or for at least 24 hours after you stop having symptoms, whichever is longer.

Why is it so deadly

The swine influenza virus that is causing the 2009 outbreak is a type A influenza virus. There are many sub-types of influenza A. The virus mutates into many forms, so each form of the mutant needs a separate vaccine, which we are unable to do. Some H1N1 viruses only infect pigs. Others infect humans and pigs and birds. Hence, a new influenza vaccine is made every year to keep up with the new H1N1 variations. However, in the present outbreak, the virus has not been changed much into other forms.

How it spreads

The new swine flu virus apparently spreads just like regular flu. You could pick up germs directly from an infected person, or by touching an object they recently touched, and then touching your eyes, mouth, or nose, delivering their germs for your own infection. So, making a habit of washing hands is recommended, even when you're not ill. Flu germs can start spreading up to a day before symptoms start, and for up to seven days after getting infected.

Surprisingly, You can't get swine flu by eating pork, bacon, or other foods that came from pigs.

Symptoms

In pigs, swine flu symptoms can include a sudden onset of fever, coughing, sneezing and a discharge from the nose or eyes. Outbreaks in herds tend to occur during the colder months, and vaccines are available to control its spread in pigs.

In humans, symptoms of swine flu are like regular flu symptoms and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu. Those symptoms can also be caused by many other conditions, and that means that you and your doctor can't know, just based on your symptoms, if you've got swine flu. It takes a lab test to tell whether it's swine flu or some other condition.

Precautions

Follow these steps:

* Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Or, use an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
* Avoid close contact with sick people.
* Avoid touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.

Got flu symptoms? Stay home, and when you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue. Afterward, throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands.

Vaccine

Since virus mutates rapidly, preaparing But vaccines are being made in large quantities. Clinical trials will begin in August 2009. Depending on how long federal officials wait for the results of these tests, tens of millions of doses of swine flu vaccine could be ready as soon as September 2009, with more vaccine becoming available each month History:

The present Swine Flu outbreak is partially rooted in history, with large influenza epidemics in 1918, 1976 and earlier.

History of swine flu

The present Swine Flu outbreak is partially rooted in history, with large influenza epidemics in 1918, 1976 and earlier.
The 1918 Influenza Epidemic

Called the “Spanish” influenza strain, and classified as pandemic, during 1918 and 1919 it is thought to have infected a third of the world population and caused perhaps as many as 50 million deaths, according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control, which must have been figuratively holding its breath when it admitted deaths could have been nearly double that because many who died during that period were not actually diagnosed, nor were samples taken for lab testing and identification.

In 1918, causes of human flu and its links to avian and swine influenza were not known.

That 91-year-old virus wasn’t killed. It survives as the “ancestor” of the deadly descendants being grappled with today. Indeed, research in the 1930s found its offspring in both pigs and humans and concluded it was related to widespread flu epidemics in 1847 and 1889.

In 1976, an Army recruit at Fort Dix, NJ, complained of feeling tired and weak. He died the next day (Feb. 5) and four other soldiers were soon hospitalized. Health officials attributed the death to swine flu and said the current flu strain was closely related to that of the 1918 epidemic.
Public health officials panicked and urged President Gerald Ford to act. About 24% of the U. S. population was vaccinated.

There was an outbreak of swine flu in the Philippines in 2007.

The numbers from the World Health Organization, by July, showed 77,201 reported swine flu cases, with 332 deaths.

Arihant Nuclear submarine

On the purpose of Industrial tour, when I visited Ship Building Center at Visakhaptnam, I dint' know that place would make India a sixth member in an extraordinary league of six countries having N-Subs. This is an incredible achievement for india. Named with Arihant submarine (meaning "Killer of Enemies") are nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines is scheduled to be launched on 26 July 2009, on the ewe of Vijay Diwas - marking India's triumph over Pakistani intruders in Kargil. Built under top secret ATV (Advanced Technology Vessels) project, Arihanth is constructed by Indian Navy, DRDO and BARC.

Completing the nuclear triad

Sagarika / K15 missiles and Agni-3, developed by DRDO are yet to be included to Arihant. DRDO has been concurrently working on the equally Sagarika project since the mid-1990s, under which the 700km range K-15 missile has been tested from submersible pontoon launchers till now. The next challenge is to test-fire the K-15 missile from the ATV. Moreover, with US, Russia and China fielding over 5,000km range SLBMs, Indian scientists are also working on an SLBM variant of the 3,500km Agni-III missile. It will take minimum of 2 years for arihant to be fully operational and then it will be commissioned by Indian Navy.

Arihant Project Details:

Funding: 30,000 Crore
Participants: Indian Navy, DRDO, BARC
Other companies involved: L&T, BEL, IGCAR
Length of the submarine: 104m
Wight : 6000 Ton
Fuel used: Nuclear Energy, 20%-34% enriched uranium fuel (160-190MW)
One pressurized water reactor (PWR)
Speed: 12-15 (surfaced) 30-34 (submerged)
Range: Unlimited (Limited by food supply)
Armament:
  • Torpedoes: 6 21" (533mm) torpedo tubes
  • Total capacity (torpedoes, and missiles): 30 weapons
  • SLBM - 12 launch tubes (each with 2.4 meter diameter)
  • 12 x K15 SLBM (3 in each launch tube)
  • 4 x Agni III (SLBM)(Under development)
  • Torpedoes and Mines
Launched by: PM Manmohan Singh's Wife.
Comparison with other powers of world:

N-Subs built by US, Russia and China are 71, 40 and 10 respectivley. India is planning to built 3 Arihants. Its has been 54 years since the first N-sub entered waters that was built by US.

Comparing with Pakistan

It doesn't have any N-subs. Its not even in a position to buy them. Its has only 8 submarines which are diesel electrical. We have 16 as such. problem with conventional submarines is that they need to be surfaces frequently for charging of their batteries, which increases the chances to be detected.

Kalam frisked by American Airliner

Frisking of former President A P J Abdul Kalam by the staff of America's Continental Airline caused uproar on Tuesday in Parliament after which the Government registered an FIR here against the ‘concerned staff’ of the airlines.
77-year-old Kalam was frisked in violation of the mandatory protocol at Delhi International airport before he was to board the Newark-bound Continental Airline flight on April 21. The staff of the airline frisked him after which he was allowed to board the plane.

What is the point of making this issue so complicated? I don’t think this is the issue our parliament/ politician or media needs to be concentrated. Checking the passengers is done by all carriers flying to the US from most of the countries in the world and there is no exemption to this rule. Why should one be omitted from this check? Since frisking VIPs is a breach of protocol, ail liners or any agency should be given strict notices to follow these protocols. In fact Dr. Kalam must be lauded for having gone through the checks without complaining. He is indeed leading by example. Our petty politicians have much to learn from this.

Solar Eclipse July 22nd

Solar eclipse is on July 22, 2009 and if you are looking for Superstitions, Timings, Places of solar eclipse – help is here. Here are the time when the solar eclipse or Surya Grahan 2009 will be seen in Bhopal, patna, varanasi, gaya, sikkim, darjeeling, siliguri, ujjain, surat and other places in India.

Superstitions in India

Superstition about Eclipse is a worldwide phenomenon. Many cultures believed that a demon or dragon swallowed the sun.
In India we believe that Rahu and Ketu play a role in the eclipse. Rahu and Ketu are supposed to be planets but they really have no existence in the solar system that we know about. They are purely inventions, beautiful creations albeit, of the mind of the ancient people.

Superstitions in China

In China, it is believed that the dragon swallows the sun during eclipse. So they would beat drums to produce great noise and commotion to frighten away the dragon while, the Japanese would cover the wells so that the demons in the cover of darkness during the eclipse would not drop poison into them.

Other stories

In Romania people believed that werewolves and demons ate up the sun during the eclipse. To frighten them away they would light up huge fires and ring church bells would be rung throughout the eclipse.

Sometimes the superstitions can be used to an advantage! In 1503 Christopher Columbus was stranded in Jamaica because his boats had got eaten up by worms. The natives living in Jamaica were hospitable to start with but because of the behavior of the Spaniards and because of the prolonged stay, they turned hostile. Christopher Columbus and his crew were dependent on the natives for their food. When the natives became angry, they cut off the food supply to Columbus and his men.
Columbus then called for a meeting of all the chiefs. He chose a day when he knew lunar eclipse would occur. When all the chiefs gathered, he told them that if they did not restore food supplies to them, he will make the moon disappear. Of course the chiefs laughed. Then Christopher Columbus said:
Behold!
The lunar eclipse had started. Slowly the moon started disappearing. And the chiefs were frightened. How is it possible that somebody is making the moon disappear?

They went down on their knees and begged him to restore moon:
For we promise to provide you with all the supplies you need as long as you stay here.
Christopher Columbus then pretended to consult with the Gods and the Moon. He came out of his ship just as the lunar eclipsed ended and the moon reappeared once more on the horizon.
And thereafter till his stay he had enough food supplies!

Photography

Photographing such total solar eclipse is possible with fairly common film camera equipment. In order for the disk of the sun/moon to be easily visible, a fairly high magnification telephoto lens is needed (70-200 mm for a 35 mm camera), and for the disk to fill most of the frame, a longer lens is needed (over 500 mm). For those who are interested in photographing the total solar eclipse, here are few tips to make your photographing fruitful.

Precautions

Viewing the Sun after totality can be dangerous. Hence do not view the sun after eclipse as it emits highly hazardous rays.

While in Photographing, do take proper precautions to safeguard your eyes. The sun when viewed through the view finder of the camera might affect the retina of the eyes, which might even be a cause for losing our eyes. One of the most widely available filters for safe solar viewing is shade number 14 welder’s glass, which can be obtained from welding supply outlets.
